Voting: Your Voice Counts

Today is the Republican Primary Election in Florida. Although this post might only seem relevant to Floridians who are members of the Republican party- it's not. At 21, this is the second election I've been able to be a part of, voting-wise. Although I have to admit, I haven't been following the politics as closely as I should be this time around, I think it's important that Americans take time out to get caught up on what's going on and educate themselves on the potential candidates, as someone new will be chosen to lead our country in just a few months.

To quickly catch up to speed on candidates in the running for the 2012 Election, check out CNN's Election Center here. The site will allow you to not only see who's running (and who's out), but also where each candidate stands on the issues. Reading over the brief snippet of each candidate will take you less than 5 minutes.

Rock the Vote, an organization I became familiar with in 2008 during the last election, is reaching out to citizens in the Millennial Generation (those born after 1980), as this generation makes up about 1/4 of the voting population- and unfortunately, is largely absent during elections. Visit their site to register to vote, ask any election-related questions, or to see how you can help get involved in encouraging others to vote. Popular bands amongst the targeted 18-29 age group are also joining in Rock the Vote's efforts by touring with them at select cities around the U.S.

If you haven't registered to vote yet, please do so! Whether you're affiliated with the Democrat, Republican, or Independent party, make the time to voice your opinion on issues you're concerned about. If you're unable to vote at your designated precinct on election days, request an absentee ballot and submit your vote in the mail. It's great that we live in a country where we're able to speak up about issues that are important to us, unlike many other countries around the world. Take advantage of the fact that we live in a free country and make moves to support the issues close to your heart.

Rachel:
Listen to this 60's style song by newcomer Mayer Hawthorne and I guarantee you'll be humming it, singing the chorus, and bobbing your head to it for the rest of the day. I have to admit, the music video for "The Walk" is a little strange- but nonetheless, the song is great!

Kayla:
My Tuesday Tune is a song called "Moth's Wings" by the indie rock band Passion Pit. There is something so inspiring about this song and makes you feel so good and almost a reassurance that everything will be okay. It makes you feel like you're in a fantasy and the explosion of sound at the beginning of the chorus always warms my heart! I hope you all enjoy! :)

Screen Actors Guild Awards 48th Annual Life Achievement Award
Mary Tyler Moore

The cast of The Help winning Best Cast Performance at the 2012 SAG awards.

The difference between these awards, compared to the others, is that it is voted on solely by the other actors. Most of the winners find great appreciation is this award in particular because they are voted by their peers and fellow actors. Most of the awards were pretty obvious, as indicated from The Golden Globes and The Critics Choice awards in the past month. The one award that I found was wrong was best actor. I totally thought Clooney would take it due to his amazing performance in The Descendants. Instead, Jean Dujardin took it for The Artist. In my opinion, I don’t believe a performance with no words is better than Clooney’s or Pitt’s in their films where they act AND speak! But we’ll see who will take the top prize at the Oscars! I am also SO happy for the cast and crew of The Help. That was by far my favorite movie of the year and I’m so happy for the recognition it is receiving, especially for Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis!

The next award show is the big one! The 2012 84th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, February 26, 2012 on ABC. We’ll be watching and giving you all the scoop from the winners to the dresses! Tune in with us!

Touch: The Pilot Episode

Jack Bauer is back! Well not quite, but Keifer Sutherland’s new show Touch is pretty awesome. FOX’s new show focuses on Martin Bohm (Kiefer Sutherland) and his son Jake (David Mazouz), an 11 year-old boy who has never spoken a word. Jake immerses himself in patterns, saying [in the show intro] that “things most people see as chaos actually follow a set of laws or behaviors," and believing in the “Red Threat of Fate,” an ancient Chinese myth that “the gods have tied a red thread around every one of our ankles and attached it to all the peoples lives who we’re destined to touch.”

The pilot episode focused on the numbers 318, building an intricate web (plot-wise), involving a number of people around the world—in New York, Baghdad, Dublin, Tokyo, and England. Each of these people ended up affecting one another’s lives greatly even though they were all complete strangers. To avoid spoiling the show for those who haven't watched yet, I'll give some brief highlights of the episode: a cell phone lost at Heathrow Airport makes its way around the world to all of the above-mentioned cities, Jack Bauer--err-- Martin, gets into a scuffle, a boy in Baghdad gets caught almost stealing and is punished with having a bomb strapped to his chest, Jake climbs the same phone tower and just chills out at the top multiple times.. even in the rain, a man who played the same lotto numbers for 10 years finally hits the jackpot, and Jake places several cell phones in a dominos-type setup and they all ring.. at the same time.. from the same number. Intrigued?

The show definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I really liked how the show was mapped out, flashing back and forth between characters and stories, and seeing how they all came together in the end. It almost seems as if part of the show concept was taken from Mitch Albom's book The Five People You Meet in Heaven, as everyone connects in some way--except most of the people on the show never actually meet in person. I'm also wondering if there's going to be a Heroes-like twist, with the supernatural aspects of the show. Will Jake meet others with the ability to see things the way he does, or people will another type of gift that could come into play?

Although I believe in patterns, I find it highly coincidental—perhaps too coincidental, that the numbers 318 popped up as many times as they did for the show to be realistic. I think it'll be interesting to see how Kiefer Sutherland's character will be in this show. Is he going to attempt to save the day for every pattern his son predicts and go into a full-time Jack Bauer type character solving mysteries and saving the day? Will Jake ever talk? What role will the social worker play in the show? Unfortunately last night’s episode was just a tease—a quick one-hour episode to introduce the show to viewers and leave them wanting more. The series will premiere on Monday, March 19th and 9 p.m. on FOX. If you missed the first episode, be sure to visit FOX’s official site for the show to get caught up!

Favorite Celebrity Hairstyles

Last week I posted a list of some of my favorite celebrity makeup looks. This week I’m posting some of my favorite celebrity hairstyles. From curly to straight, from braid to updos, here is my list of favorite looks! Let’s all try out some of these styles together!
Jennifer Aniston

When you think of Jen Aniston, we all immediately think of one thing: hair. Whether it was “The Rachel” back in the 90s or the pin straight golden blonde locks now, we always know she will have the best color, cut and style in Hollywood. Her stylist is nothing short of a master! Her hair is normally straight with a bounce of wave, and to get this look I suggest drying your hair straight with a large round brush to add the body!
Mila Kunis

Mila’s long, curly locks she rocked at the 2011 SAG Awards were absolutely beautiful! This is one my favorite looks, and one I try to accomplish on a daily basis. Her chocolate brown hair and light hues of blonde highlights make this look perfect! Using a one to one and a half inch curling iron, wrap strands of hair around the barrel and turn it upside down. Hold for about 15 seconds and release. Do this in layers and sections, spraying hairspray to keep the curls intact. We all can only hope to nail this look as well as she does!
Kristen Stewart

The “bed head” messy hair look is one of my absolute favorites. It’s cool and young and perfect for on-the-go! It helps to have somewhat of wavy to curly hair, but to get this look you basically do the same as Mila’s, only not making the curls so tight. Make sure to run your fingers through your hair after curling to help with the messy, loose look. Also, teasing the roots helps to perfect this!
Reese Witherspoon

Talk about a perfect pony-tail! Every time I see her, I think she looks like a perfect Barbie doll with her platinum blonde hair and girl-next-door smile. When she showed up to the 2011 Academy Awards, I melted over her high pony-tail. She pulled it off like only Reese could. I’m assuming she had an extra hair piece on top to add the thickness to her hair. This look is absolutely gorgeous and was styled perfectly on her!
Kate Hudson

I love Kate’s braid in the front of her hairline. This style simple and fast but can be a tricky one to accomplish. It helps to have an extra hand to help with this until your fingers get acquainted with the placements. You start at one side of the head and French braid the strand (size depending on your desired length and width) until you hit right behind the ear. After, secure your braid with a couple bobby pins and you have a fun look, perfect for a summer day! She made it complete by adding loose waves to the rest of her hair!
Selena Gomez

Selena’s classic curls are stunning on everyone of every age. The big barrel curls are tightly in place and her hair is pinned to one side to add a dramatic effect. I love the side look and makes her look so elegant!
Jessica Simpson

This curly updo is my favorite for a black tie affair. First you curl all your hair like you normally would, in sections and layers. You then twist your hair into a loose bun in the back (the style of bun is dependent upon each individual) and gently pulling pieces out all around the head and going over with the iron to enforce tight curls. In Jessica’s look she took her side bangs and straightened them, but depending on your hair texture, you can also curl those in front. Perfect!

Best Customer Rewards Programs

In this day and age, companies have to compete against each other to get the customer. More so, companies are competing for loyalty, ensuring that their customers are happy and satisfied so they'll return  (and keep spending money). On the other side, as consumers, we're constantly looking for ways to be rewarded for our loyalty to specific brands/stores.. by saving money or getting cool perks for spending with companies. Here are my favorite Reward Programs (all free), that you should sign up for if you haven't yet!

Starbucks Rewards program offers great incentives to its loyal customers. Upon registering [your gift card], you'll receive a free drink coupon in the mail for your birthday. Each time you use the card, which you can reload at any time, you receive a star. Once you reach 5 stars (equivalent to 5 transactions), you're at the Green Level. Rewards here include: a free drink coupon for your birthday, 2 hours of free-wifi, free refills on brewed coffee, free flavored syrup, free soymilk, a free tall beverage with every pound of coffee purchased, and free trial offers.

After 30 stars/transactions, you reach the Gold Level. This is the highest level of Starbucks' loyalty program, which gives customers the following benefits: everything included in the Green Level, PLUS a free drink coupon every 15 stars, tailored offers and coupons, and the big bonus-- a personalized Gold Card and welcome packet. If you're an iPhone or Android owner, make sure to download the Starbucks app, which allows you to track your star status, pay with your card's generated barcode, locate the closest Starbucks and more.

Word to the wise- make sure you register each gift card under your account for Starbucks Rewards and add funds to the card to continue paying. Starbucks tracks your stars by each transaction with the cards registered to you.
Starbucks Gold Card & Welcome Packet

Upromise is a great rewards program to take part in if you're looking to save some money up for college-- whether it be for yourself, a friend, or family member, you can earn 1-25% back on purchases made through the Upromise program. Set up an account and add your debit/credit card numbers (yes, it's safe). Once your account is set up, make your online purchases at participating retailers through the Upromise site and start saving! Track your savings (and money back) through the site. Once you're ready to take action with the money earned, decide whether you want to invest the money in a tax-deferred 529 plan, want to pay off some of your existing student loans, or request a check for college or other expenses.

If you're a current college student, Amazon Prime is an essential membership to have. Simply register using your college e-mail account (.edu), and you're signed up for a year of FREE two-day shipping on most Amazon products-- including same-day release delivery, and unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows with Prime instant videos.

Best Buy's Reward Zone program is great for entertainment-related shoppers. Benefits of their program include: Receiving 1 point for every $1 spent, a $5 reward certificate to spend at Best Buy for every 250 points earned, and exclusive access to special Best Buy events. If you're a high-spender, and make $2500 in purchases at Best Buy, your rewards account gets upgraded to Premier Silver Status. At this level, you not only receive the benefits of the basic Reward Zone membership, but you also receive: complimentary Geek Squad Home Theater consultation, access to a special helpline, personal shopper service, 25% increase in points (1.25 points for every $1 spent), free standard shipping, exclusive offers/discounts, and a 45-day extended return policy.

Tuesday Tunes

Rachel:
If you're not familiar with Matt Nathanson yet, you need to be! I've been a huge fan of his since high school when his song "Laid" was featured in one of the American Pie movies. My song pick this week is "I Saw," from his album Beneath These Fireworks.

Kayla:
My Tuesday Tune this week is called "Turning Page" by Sleeping At Last. I was first introduced to this song when it was featured during very poignant scenes in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and ever since I've been obsessed. The words are beautiful, his voice is breath-taking, definitely worth a listen. I hope you enjoy as much as I do! :)

Classic Films Returning To Theaters

Something borrowed, something blue, and what was old is now new. Cinemas are bringing back old classic films for a limited time engagement, and converting them into 3D films for audiences to experience in a more up-to-date fashion. They’ve started with some of the most popular Disney movies, and are now merging to iconic films such as Titanic and Star Wars.

Last fall, The Lion King was re-released to theaters in 3D and crushed the box office competition for multiple weeks. It was later released on DVD in blu-ray and 3D DVD. With this success, I’m sure the re-releases are far from over. There is something about watching one of your favorite childhood movies in a movie theater that brings back so many joyous memories and makes you feel so good. It’s like time traveling back to when we were younger and life wasn’t as complicated. Singing “Hakuna Matata” like it was yesterday when you were running around your house belting out the classic tune. Beauty and the Beast is currently in theaters with its 3D re-release and continuing to bank at the box office. Disney is also working on the re-release of Pixar’s hugely successful film, Finding Nemo, which is expected to hit theaters in September of this year. Disney is also planning to release The Little Mermaid and Monsters, Inc. in the year 2013.

On to the more iconic films of our generation, the Star Wars saga will start its big return to the big screen on February 10th and super fans could not be more excited. Not only are all six films being planned on releasing subsequently throughout the years, but they are also creating special 3D glasses. Fans will receive a specially-made Star Wars Fighter Pod glasses with the purchase of each 3D ticket. There are also rumors the Indiana Jones series will be re-released as well.

But, the movie I’m most excited about, and counting down the days till, is the release of the mega-hit, award-winning film, Titanic. Titanic is sailing back to theaters on April 6, 2012, just days before the 100th anniversary of when the actual boat set sailed, hoping to make its way to America. Titanic is one of the most successful movies ever made. I'm sure the film will look amazing in 3D, so it makes sense that director James Cameron would want to re-release this film, especially after his success with Avatar. Cameron says about releasing the film: "There's a whole generation that's never seen ‘Titanic’ as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be 'Titanic' as you've never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike." It’s safe to say that I’ve never been more excited!!

POP Phone
Although not necessary whatsoever, the POP Phone is probably one of the coolest tech accessories to exist, hooking up to Apple products (iPhone, iPad, MacBook) or any other phone, computer, or tablet's headphone jack. Featured in a variety of colors (see below), the POP phone throws back to the days when we actually held a traditional phone in our hands. Prices for these snazzy accessories range from $25-30, not bad for something that adds a little color and nostalgia to your day!

Call Me Doctor
We've loved Rachel Bilson since her days of playing the great Summer Roberts on The O.C. and we have recently started watching her new CW show Hart of Dixie. However, her experiment with a career in the rap music industry has recently caught our attention. She is beyond hilarious in this video and we thought it would be great to share it with you all. Oh, one more thing, don't forget to "Call Her Doctor!"

Favorite Celebrity Makeup Looks

When a celebrity hits the red carpet, is on the cover of a magazine or on a late-night talk show, we pay close attention to every hair strand, every color in their makeup, and even to the way she is wearing her dress (belt or no belt?). And if you’re anything like me, you become inspired, desperately trying to mimic their look. One of my favorite things is to try and copy is the stars makeup. I watch youtube videos and read step-by-step instructions on how to get the same looks as stars such as Kristen Stewart and Mila Kunis. With that said, I decided to put together a list of my favorite celebrity makeup looks. Hopefully to inspire you with new styles to try, and of course, adding your own little twist to make it unique to you! So pull out the lipstick and pucker up because these are some of my favorite makeup styles straight from the stars! Xoxo!

The Smoky Eye

There are a couple different ways to do a great smoky eye. You can do a lot of neutral tones and darker shades of eye shadows like Mila or you can even add a little pop of color in the mix. The one thing that is the key to a perfect smoky eye is eyeliner. A very dark eyeliner to go across the top of the eyelid and a thick layer of dark eyeliner under the eye at the water line. I’m also a huge mascara lover. I’m a caker. I love to put on about two or three layers of mascara, sometimes even using a couple different types and brands to complete the entire eye!

The Cat Eye

The cat eye look is one that is becoming more and more popular. It was the hottest eye look in the 60’s and 70’s and now it is making a comeback! Stars like Taylor Swift and Adele are known for their cat eye makeup. This look requires a pretty steady hand to trace the line. I recommend you use a thin eye pencil first to get the exact shape you want and then fill it out with a thicker, liquid eyeliner. My favorite cat eye look was Kristen Stewart’s for W Magazine who was channeling a 60’s pin up girl. Beautiful!

Red Lips

Megan Fox does a red lip unlike anyone else. The one important rule to remember in doing any makeup is to pick one asset to highlight. When doing smoky eye, you don’t want to do a dramatic lip too. You want to keep the lip pale and understated. Same goes with the red lips. You want to be sure to keep the eyes toned down. A nice beige-toned eye shadow and thick eyeliner on the top lid, like Megan has, is the perfect combo with the dramatic red lip!

The Natural Look

Jennifer Aniston is the epitome of a natural beauty. She always has a sun kissed glow to her skin, and always has a very natural eye makeup. To perfect this look, you need to have a very clean face. You should apply a small amount of foundation and powder, very natural-toned eye shadows, a light/thin line of eyeliner and just a touch of mascara. The most makeup on the face for this look is a light pink shade a blush to make the face pop!

Dewy

People either love the dewy look or hate it. I happen to love it! It’s a nice look to do every once and a while. To get this look I would use very moisturizing foundations and a highlighter on my cheekbones. Also, use light shades of cream eye shadows. They also have cream blushes that would go good on top of the foundation too. I would not suggest this for women with oily skin, because it can cause breakouts on oily faces, but if you have normal to dry skin, this is a look you should try!

Tuesday Tunes

Every Tuesday we're going to pick two songs to feature on our blog for a segment called "Tuesday Tunes." We're each going to pick a song to showcase our own musical tastes and hopefully introduce you to new music and artists!

Rachel
Today's featured tune is "Home," by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It's a very sweet song, quite catchy, and one of my top feel-good songs. Be sure to take a listen!

Kayla

To stay on Rachel's theme of feel-good songs, my Tuesday Tune is "Wild and Young" by American Bang. This song always puts me in a good mood and definitely makes you want to rock out, head swing and all! Enjoy! :)

Must-Have iPhone Apps

I got my first cell phone in 2004, and since then, I’ve been through a number of phones--getting bored after a few months with each model. However, in December 2010 when I purchased my first iPhone, the game changed. The iPhone is the one phone I haven’t gotten bored with and I couldn’t imagine ever switching to another phone type (once you go Apple, you don't go back)! So in honor of the tentative arrival of Kayla’s first iPhone tomorrow, here are my top 5 must-have apps for any iPhone owner:

GetGlue: This app is perfect for the entertainment lover. Check-in to movies, music, books, video games, or topics you’re currently immersing yourself in, and engage in conversation with others who are doing the same. Many check-ins also earn you GetGlue stickers, which you can order physical copies of and have shipped to you at no cost! This app is one of the best (and newest) in social media, bringing more attention to the rising of Social-TV.

Mint.com: Wondering how much money you have in your bank accounts, what your credit card balances are, and if you’ve been overspending recently? Mint.com allows you to view all of the information through this completely safe and secure app, and even gives you an option to add extra security with a pin to access the app. In the overview tab, you can see the combined total of your bank account (Ugh, I WISH that was my balance), as well as the status of your budget vs. spending and how much money you have coming in per month. After setting a budget for yourself, the app also alerts you when you've gone over/are close to reaching the budget and when you have a low balance in your bank account.

Hotel Tonight: Hotels too expensive or sold-out when booking prior to your trip? Planning a spur-of-the-moment trip? Forget to book your hotel? Then Hotel Tonight is the perfect app for you! Book a last-minute hotel deal in select cities at incredibly cheap rates. The company even gives you some credit towards your first hotel purchase through the app! My personal experience with the app? Ending up with a hotel room in Las Vegas the night of my 21st birthday completely free. Although there were extenuating circumstances (the hotel we had originally booked through the app overbooked, Hotel Tonight pulled through for my milestone birthday and really went above and beyond).

Instagram: Apple's App of The Year. Need I say more? This app takes sharing photos to the next level. Not only can you follow your friends and stay up-to-date on their lives in pictures, but you can also check out what photos are the most popular and add your feedback to uploads. The app also gives you awesome choices to change the look of your photos without going through Photoshop, Picnik, or any other photo site.

HBO GO: Subscriber of HBO? Download HBOGO and access every episode of every HBO show ever! This app is perfect for catching up on the last episode of a show you may have missed, watching the show if you’re away from home, and experiencing the best of HBO’s programming throughout it’s history (over 1,400 shows/movies to watch). Best Dressed List: The Golden Globes 2012

Hollywood award shows always bring out the hottest stars from TV, movies and music. But, let’s be honest, we all know our favorite part isn’t who wins the awards. We LOVE seeing what the fabulous stars are wearing: everything from the gowns, to the jewelry, to the shoes, to how their hair and makeup is styled! Here is our list of the best dressed winners from The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards last night!
Our Top 5
Sarah Hyland
The Modern Family star looked stunning in a gold vintage Dolce & Gabbana strapless gown. I love the lace detail down the dress and the black lace tie at the waist. Hyland topped it off with simple, yet gorgeous Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Her hair was pinned back with pieces of curls falling around her face and smoky eye makeup to complete entire look. This was my absolute favorite look from the red carpet. Well done, Sarah!

Reese Witherspoon
The Oscar-winning actress wowed the carpet in scarlet red Zac Posen gown. She always looks like a perfect Barbie doll and this year was no exception. The color on her was perfection and her laid-back, messy waves was an unexpected hair choice for the star but totally worked for this look.

Jessica Alba
The new mom looked absolutely beautiful in a pale lilac Gucci gown. The actress paired her silk charmeuse embroidered dress with diamond jewelry by Bulgari and a Roger Vivier clutch. I can’t believe she had a baby just a few months ago. She looks gorgeous and the color of the gown looked perfect on her.

Claire Danes
The Best Actress in a television drama winner stepped it up in a black and white J. Mendel gown last night. When she first walked on the red carpet, I just saw the front of the dress and thought it was quite boring to be honest. Then she turned around. This dress is all about the back. The back of the dress featured an amazing cut out covered in jewels. She accessorized her look with diamond jewelry by Bulgari.

Evan Rachel Wood
The nominated actress stunned on the red carpet in a peacock inspired Gucci gown. The metallic and feathered-looking gown has a striking green color and looks beautiful with her skin tone and smoky eyes. This just was fun, young and edgy. It was definitely a risk to take at the Golden Globes, but it paid off. I absolutely loved this dress!

Honorable Mention
Kate Beckinsale
Beckinsale looked gorgeous on the carpet in a cream colored Roberto Cavalli gown. She could wear anything and look beautiful, but this was one of my favorite looks on her. She looks like perfection.

Angelina Jolie
Jolie stepped onto the red carpet and stunned in a one shoulder ivory satin Atelier Versace gown. The dress had a pop of color of bright red at the top of the neckline. She accessorized her gown with Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Not as perfect as her green gown she wowed in last year, but a nice choice for Jolie.

Paula Patton
Paula wore what only Paula Patton could pull off. A bright yellow Monique Lhuillier strapless custom made gown. The color is perfection. But only she could wear it as beautifully as she does. It looks great with her skin tone and dark hair. If only I could look that good in that.

Lea Michele
Although I absolutely LOVED Lea Michele’s metallic silver Marchesa gown, I don’t think it was right for the Globes. This is definitely more of a flashy Grammy’s dress. But nonetheless, this gown is gorgeous, young, and edgy and looks amazing on her body!

Shailene Woodley
The young star looked beautiful and fresh on her first big red carpet. Her Marchesa dress was very elegant and age appropriate for her. She did a great job!

Nicole Kidman
Although we’re not too crazy about this dress, Kidman stepped it up in a way that we have never seen from her. She never dresses to impress, and I’m so happy to her in something a little younger, and not so old-ladyish. I’ve got to give it to her. She looks amazing!

Until the next award show, we'll have to awe over these gorgeous gowns and dream of us "normal people" wearing them! Xoxo.
