Cause of the Month: A Broader Way

If you are a Broadway fan, the names Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs bring a smile to your face. They are the King and Queen of Broadway. The married duo first met in the 90’s when they performed in one of Broadway’s best, RENT, together and went on to do countless stage productions. Now, the couple has developed a wonderful organization appropriately titled “A Broader Way” to help young girls in underprivileged communities let their inner star shine at a performing arts camp.

The impact the organizations hopes to achieve is to help develop self-esteem, leadership and ambitions in young girls through the performing arts. Their hope is to inspire those in rough economic communities in New York City to have self-worth and empowerment.

The camp is run by Taye and Idina themselves, and have staffed the event with talented Broadway artists to assist the girls in their quest to find a voice. The 10-day camp has many activities including singing and dancing lessons, acting and performing, writing, and various outdoor activities such as swimming and tennis.

The camp concludes with a performance on a New York City stage in front of all the girls’ family and friends.

This is an incredible organization that we here at Small Towns and City Lights are proud to support. If you would like to donate to help keep this camp running, donate here. If you’d like to learn more about “A Broader Way”, you can check out their official website. Shine on!
