Project DIY: September 2013 Review

Although I love handmade jewelry and accessories, I’ve never taken the time to actually make any myself – until last week. After stumbling across Project DIY, I was eager to try my hand at making these things myself and I’m happy to announce that I successfully did just that!

Project DIY is a new $30 monthly subscription box by M&J Trimming that sends you 2-3 runway inspired fashion accessories for you to create yourself. Each month has a different theme, their inaugural month (this month – September) being Autumn in New York. The company sent me their first box to review – check out my thoughts below!

To go along with the Autumn in New York theme, Project DIY included a suede tassel keychain, horseshoe wrap bracelet, and equestrian charm necklace. Each item had it’s own small box featuring an image of the finished product on the front and all of the necessary pieces on the inside.

Additionally, inside each box, a list of pieces, the website for the how-to instructions and any measurement tool needed was included. This was especially helpful for keeping all of the pieces for each fashion piece together.

Although I sort of wish the instructions for each accessory were included in the box, I did enjoy using my iPad Mini to zoom in and out and the interactiveness using the Web provided when putting my pieces together.

Additionally, if you’re not typically a jewelry/accessory maker, Project DIY offers a “starter kit” ($20),   which gives you basic tools you’ll need for all your DIY projects – a needle nose plier, wire cutter, chain nose plier, jump ring opener, assorted claps, earring hooks, jump rings, and chain extenders.

All 3 of the projects were relatively easy to put together. I found the equestrian charm necklace to be the easiest and the horseshoe wrap bracelet to be the hardest (the wire cutting/wrapping was not my forte). Going to the store, I would’ve spent well over $30 on these finished accessories and would never know what pieces to buy individually if putting it together myself.

This is a great subscription box for anyone who enjoys crafting/jewelry making or who loves fashionable jewelry/accessories but doesn’t want to pay an insane amount of money for them. Plus, it’s a lot more exciting to be sporting an accessory that you put together yourself, I really love it. This box is well worth the monthly price tag!

First jewelry-making success!
