Christmas Gift Guide 2013: 5 Picks for Dogs

We’ve featured gift ideas for everyone on your list – the kids, the men, and the women, and now it’s time to share perhaps my favorite gift guide of all, my top 5 gift ideas for dogs! Even more exciting, Sheba was able to test out the majority of the products in my gift guide/her wish list, thanks to a few of the companies included.

Harry Barker Penguin Dog Toy Set:
Gift sets from Harry Barker are on top of the doggy wish lists this year – and for good reason! The adorable designer dog toys come in a variety of styles (e.g. rope, squeaker, chew) for your furry friends. Yes, you can purchase the toys individually, but I love the “good dog” baskets filled with toys. Perfect for Christmas morning – that is, if your dog has been good :)

HB was kind enough to send the Penguin Dog Toy Set ($64 for small toys, $68 for the large) and yes, the basket does live up to the hype we’ve been seeing featured in big publications such as O Magazine and WSJ. I love the variety of toy types and how great the quality is. There’s also plenty of room left in the basket for existing or other new toys afterward, making this gift basket a great storage place for all of your dog’s play things!

Petco Christmas Toys:
We’re big Petco shoppers and are absolutely loving their Christmas line of toys! Ranging in size, price, and style, you can’t go wrong with any of the toys in their festive collection. Petco also offers a number of gift sets including all toys and also creative and festively designed poop bag sets ($12), which definitely come in handy during daily walks!

Petco generously sent this collection of toys for us to check out and Sheba was in heaven, coming back and pulling one toy after another out of the box, it was a bottomless pit of excitement! Her favorites in the group were the Santa, Quail, and Squirrel – all having a common theme of squeakers (she loves to pull them out), and naturally, the bacon (with a mustache – LOVE)!

Planet Dog Festive Toys & Travel Bag:
I was first introduced to the Planet Dog brand through BarkBox when Sheba received the strawberry treat ball, which she’s been obsessed with since the day she received it. So naturally, this company has been at the top of our list! Two of my favorite festive toys this year come from Planet Dog – the snowball ($9.95) and the Orbee-Tuff Bulb with Treat Spot ($9-11 depending on size). Additionally, I really love their On-the-Go Food/Water Bowl ($11-13 depending on size), perfect for the on-the-go occasions, whether you’re away for the weekend or out for a day adventure. As if we didn’t already love this company enough, they also donate a portion of each sale to their charity organization, Planet Dog Foundation!

Planet Dog sent us the 3 items on Sheba’s list to check out firsthand and Sheba couldn’t even begin to contain her excitement once she got a whiff of the package. There’s a distinct smell to the Planet Dog toys which to me, smells a bit minty (and really good), and doesn’t seem to wear off! I love that both the snowball and bulb toys allow you to place small treats inside, giving your dog a little challenge to get to the prize. And I can’t tell you how wonderful having a designated on-the-go food bowl is, that’s easily washable and transportable. Definitely a must-have for those of you with on-the-go lifestyles!

Soggy Doggy Slopmat:
One of challenges I’ve been facing as a dog owner is that lovely mess around the food and water bowls that never seems to end. I’ve tried various rugs and mats, but none of them seem to do the trick.   I recently stumbled across the Soggy Doggy Slopmat ($22) and have seen nothing but rave reviews about how sturdy and absorbent they are. These slopmats also double as regular mats, whether it be one your pup lays on by the door or to have them sit on to get dried off after being out in the rain/pool/bath. Until Christmas (or while supplies last), Soggy Doggy is also offering a BOGO deal on these slopmats (with the code “FREESLOPMAT” which is awesome! I’ve already placed my order  and can’t wait to try them out! It might not be as exciting of a present TO your dog, but it’s something that will be great for them!

BarkBox Subscription:
If you’re a regular Small Towns & City Lights reader, you know how much we love BarkBox and a gift guide post for presents to spoil your pup wouldn’t be complete without it! There are 3 tiers of subscription options – $19 (6 months), $24 (3 months), or $29 (1 month), and each are based on the size of your dog (which you select) – small, medium or large. I started out trying the subscription through a Groupon deal and since then have been a loyal customer, just reaching my one-year mark! This is the Christmas gift that keeps giving, sending you a box full of toys and treats once a month. Spoil away!
