I’ve been dying for a Dropcam ever since being introduced to the product at BlogHer last July. After patiently waiting, a newer version, the Dropcam Pro was released and I’m excited to say that Santa hooked me up with the #1 item on my list!
What is Dropcam? A cloud-based video monitoring camera that allows you to check in on babies, pets, etc. wherever you may be (provided there is Wi-Fi available). Not only can you drop in and watch a video of what’s going on in the room your Dropcam’s set up, but you can also utilize the two-way talk functionality which is probably my favorite part.
Setting up Dropcam is really easy – it took me no more than 10 minutes to have the Dropcam software installed and the camera set up and ready to go. And while the program was downloading on my computer, I downloaded the Dropcam app onto my phone, since that’s where the camera monitoring would/will be taking place. I decided to set my Dropcam up in my kitchen/living room area, since that’s where Sheba (my dog) spends most of her time, and spying on Sheba is the main focus of my new tech toy.
Upon setting up and registering my camera, I was given 2 weeks of CVR (cloud video recording) for free, allowing me to scroll back to a certain/date time to watch footage. I love this.. and am kind of kicking myself for not buying their half off Black Friday deal, since the CVR add-on is usually $10 per month.
Aside from the ability to two-way talk, the Dropcam Pro also allows you to zoom in up to 8x, switch to night vision, and send push notifications when there’s sound, movement or both, on your camera. Additionally, you don’t need to manually switch your camera on when leaving and off when you arrive home. You can turn your video monitoring on/off remotely from your app or set your home location, letting your Dropcam turn on when you leave home and off when you return.
The Dropcam Pro retails for $199 and can be purchased on Dropcam’s official site, from Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, etc. This is definitely something to purchase with any “fun money” you have leftover in your budget. I love being able to check in on Sheba and tell her “no” if I catch her barking out the window at a passerby when I’m not home (although I feel bad when she starts looking everywhere for me)! I can’t wait to see what Dropcam comes out with next!
Do you have a Dropcam? Thinking about getting one? Would love to hear your thoughts!
