Maleficent: Movie Review

Earlier this week I had a chance to see a screening of Disney’s newest film, Maleficent, a film that gives us the back story of one of the most well-known villains from Sleeping Beauty. Starring Angelina Jolie (Maleficent) and Elle Fanning (Aurora), this film gives us an insight into Maleficent’s life and what made her so cold.

Contrary to the story were were all told through Disney’s 1959 classic, Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent wasn’t always evil. In fact, in her earlier days she had the purest heart and was full of life and love. But after a huge betrayal, her heart turned to stone and she became the Maleficent we all love to hate, who cursed newborn Aurora.

You might be thinking you don’t need to see this because you already know the story of Sleeping Beauty/Aurora and what ends up happening in the end. Not only does Maleficent show that there truly are two sides to every story, but the film shows us things in quite a different light that you might never have imagined actually happened in the fairytale. As expected, there is some overlap between the two stories/movies, but there are some pretty important gaps missing that Maleficent helps clear up.

There was quite a bit of hype for Maleficent and I was looking forward to seeing how the film would play out. There were a few scenes that I enjoyed but ultimately, it fell a little flat, in my opinion.  I think part of it had to do with the lack of character Aurora was given. I understand that the story isn’t centered around her, but things seemed a little out of place and almost like we were jumping from one scene to another without a nice transition between different events.

I thought the villain backstory concept was very interesting and at one point, my younger sister who saw the film with me (and always loved to hate Maleficent) even turned to me and said, “I think I like Maleficent.” I’d love to see Disney come out with more stories about their villains’ past and what turned them. Gives you an entirely different perspective!

Maleficent is in theaters nationwide today. Will you be seeing it?
