App of the Month: Hopper

Shoutout to my friend and fellow member of the “travel bug” club, Cristina for alerting me to this month’s app of the month, and really, app of life! If you love to travel but are always struggling to find the best deal or decide whether to book or wait (story of my life), you won’t be able to download this one fast enough either!

Hopper is a free app (also a desktop site) that tells you when to “fly and buy,” tracking down the lowest fares in general or for specific dates you’re looking to travel.

One of the top cities on my U.S. bucket list is Portland, Oregon, so I decided to use that as an example for sharing the app with you. After selecting your home airport + destination, a screen pops up showing you an at-a-glance view of the next few months, each day colored, indicating the pricing. As you can see, there’s really not a good time to fly from Tampa to Portland in the next few months in terms of price. Hello, peak travel season!

If you look at the bottom of the app, you’ll see a few different category options. After “dates,” we see “prediction.” This tells you whether the price will (likely) go up or down, and when you should definitely purchase by, before prices go up. This is SUPER helpful!

The “tips” category offers some alternatives to getting better pricing on your trip, such as changing dates. Even better, it shows you a variety of other trip dates and prices + your savings vs. the current trip. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve manually tried to change trip dates to compare pricing.

Last but not least, the “flights” tab. This will let you sort all of the flights in your selected date range by price, departure, arrival, and number of stops. This section also includes Southwest Airlines, which is awesome, considering they never seem to pop up anywhere other than their actual site!

Last but not least, see that binocular icon in the top right? You can tap it to save the destination + dates to “watch” the route. If a good/better deal becomes available, you’ll receive a push notification, alerting you.

This app is seriously life changing! You’re not limited to U.S. destinations either – it’s international! You better believe I looked up a few Europe trips as well! I’ll be bookmarking a few other trips for sure – even if it’s just to compare a few.

What destinations are you looking for a flight deal on?
