Our Encounter with A Gator

Last night, Sheba and I were taking our evening walk and a semi-traumatizing thing happened.

We were walking about an hour later than usual, since I got wrapped up watching Sunday’s episode of Mad Men. My bad! My bad, indeed.

There’s quite a bit of wildlife in my neck of the woods so I’m used to seeing birds, deer, raccoons, and the occasional (WORST EVER), snake. But this time, there was a new encounter that I definitely wasn’t prepared for.

As we rounded the corner, we passed an area with some weeds and trees, I heard a bit of rustling despite having my headphones in, and Sheba did too.

Little Miss Adventure (aka Sheba) started to jolt forward to check out the situation but my momma instinct made me quickly pull her back. I had a bad feeling. And I was right.

As we scurried away, I peeked through the weeds and I saw a big scaly tail. Then I saw the eyes staring me down. And then the teeth. A FREAKING ALLIGATOR LURKING BY THE WALKING PATH!

It wasn’t huge, but it also wasn’t small. I came to the conclusion that it was a teenage alligator. But still, an alligator that Sheba almost got into a scuffle with!!

Of course as soon as I got home (after I calmed myself down and processed what happened), I started googling alligators and what to do in these kind of situations. I had always heard to run zig-zag, but found other sites saying to run straight. I think my plan would be to just pick Sheba up and get to a high up point and/or scream and run like a maniac if one actually pursued us.

Have you ever come close to a gator? What would you do?

OMG I would DIE. That sounds TERRIFYING! I can't handle any wildlife. Last night, Andrew and I had a run-in with an enormous bee and I thought we had it bad! I'm glad you guys made it away safely!

OMGEE! That is so scary! I saw an alligator in the parking lot at Ruth Eckerd Hall once, it was BEYOND scary!! I don't like them. (Unless they are in the hush puppy/duck bacon alligator bites at Ulele Tampa! HA!)

And this is why I really don't like to be outdoors in Florida :) Alligators, snakes, coyotes…no thanks!

Oh my gosh, I would have freaked! My husband and I like to go hiking and we've encountered lots of snakes but that would have scared me big time! Yikes!

It was! I can't even imagine what would've happened if we encountered mama gator. We got out of there fast! I've been extra paranoid on our walks since!

Plus the heat :) I don't mind if they're around.. as long as I don't know about them or ever see them!

Wow, really!? I can't imagine spotting a gator in a parking lot. That's the last place I'd expect to run into one. Yikes!!

Oh it did! If any kind of reptile is involved, you can count me out! I bet you've run into some pretty scary creatures hiking!
