The Gift: Movie Review

Earlier this week I was able to catch a screening of The Gift, a highly-anticipated thriller movie that I’ve been dying to see ever since I saw the first trailer!

The movie follows Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall), a married couple who seem to be living a great life as they move into a new home. It doesn’t take long for them to bump into Gordo (Joel Edgerton), an old high school acquaintance of Simon’s. The first encounter seems harmless, but when a series of uninvited visits and gifts on the doorstep start happening, things start to get tense. It’s obvious that something’s fishy about the situation, with Gordo’s over-the-top kindness.

Pretty soon, a secret from 20+ years ago is unveiled and both Robyn and Simon are forced to deal with it. Can bygones be bygones from the past? How well do we know the people closest to us?

I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll leave it at that in terms of plot. The movie wasn’t as thriller-y as I was expecting (in terms of scare-factor), and ended up being more psychological than anything. Not to mention, there’s a pretty interesting cliff hanger at the end – I hope there will be a sequel for clarification… I need closure on it! If you see the film, let me know what you think – Gordo or Simon.

Will you be seeing The Gift this weekend?

Ahhh, you’re such a tease! :-( I love Joel Edgerton so I’ll see it for him and, since I’m more of an Edgerton fan than a Bateman fan, I’ll probably be pulling for Gordo.

It’s hard to say too much without spoiling it! Curious to see how you’ll really feel about the two characters at the end :)

Right! I was a little bummed it wasn’t as much of a thriller, but still liked it!

I enjoy Bateman and thought just the premise of this movie looked good. I’m a bit bummed to hear it wasn’t as thriller-y as the trailers make it look, but I like that it does indeed have a psychological aspect to it. I’ll probably get around to seeing it!

It was a huge bummer to me since it seemed like it’d be a lot more intense, but it was still good! I hope you like it!
