The Visit: Movie Review

A few months ago I was watching something on TV and all of a sudden a really creepy commercial caught my attention, where a grandma was telling a teenage girl to climb into the oven. Obviously this isn’t normal, so I was intrigued and since I was creeped out by the commercial, I knew it was a movie I’d have to see.

The Visit is the latest film from M. Night Shyamalan (whose The Sixth Sense still freaks me out!) and Jason Blum (producer of a ton of scary movies, including The Purge). With the combination of these guys, I knew it’d be a good one!

So what’s it about? Well, as I’m sure you’ve seen from the trailers/commercials, a brother and sister go to visit their grandparents in a remote area (because this is a staple in horror films), for a weeklong trip. However, the young teens quickly discover that something isn’t quite right. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll leave it at that. But I will say, there’s a pretty significant plot point early on that sends some flags up for what’s to come!

While The Visit falls under the horror genre, there are also SO many comedic moments! In fact, I’m pretty sure I laughed more than jumped, although there were quite a few edge-of-your-seat moments! All in all, I really enjoyed it! The film wasn’t quite what I expected going in (I didn’t think it’d be so comical), but it was a good one!

Do you enjoy scary movies? Will you be seeing The Visit this weekend?

  • I don’t know. I will definitely be scared so I might stay in the comfort of my home! My boyfriend was so upset about the movie, he was like “Now they’re making children scared of their grandparents?”

    • Haha it’s not entirely what it seems! I laughed most of the movie (there were a few jumpy moments) but I think you’d be ok :)

  • I can’t do scary movies! I used to watch them in high school because my best friend loved them but they freak me out too much! I am slightly inclined since you said this one is comical, but I still think I’m too much of a scardey cat to try it!

    • Watch it during the day when it’s still light out – or with someone else if you get scared easily! I did jump a few times (which is rare for me) but I was laughing most of the movie!

  • This sounds like a movie I’d absolutely adore, even though I get scared SO easily. About to watch the trailer, thanks for the recommendation!

    • I don’t get as scared as I used to, but there were a couple parts where they definitely got me and I jumped big time! I liked it a lot better than I expected going into it!

  • I really want to see this movie!! I love anything than makes me jump. Glad to hear you gave it a good rating.

    • I hope you like it! It definitely got me to jump a few times!

  • I usually LOVE horror movies, but this plot seemed contrived and lame from the trailer alone. But maybe I should give it a shot, huh?

    • The creepiest part in the trailer to me was the grandma in the kitchen, but the plot isn’t entirely what it seems. It was much better than I expected – there’s a little twist in there that you might find interesting!

  • emi

ahh i am the absolute worst in the world at scary movies! i don’t even like the previews hahah – but glad this one wasn’t as bad!!

  • Ah! Thanks for the review — I am not sure I could watch this one! Ahhh! haha

  • I had wondered about this movie but had doubts because M. Night Shyamalan has had so many flops and tries too hard with his twists. I’m glad to hear it wasn’t too bad. I might have to try and convince someone to go see it with me!

  • eee I don’t know if I’ll see this; I have such a hard time with scary movies. I watched Paranomal Activity and had to sleep with the lights on and with Pride and Prejudice playing on my tv for a month.
