Disney’s newest film is now in theaters, and it’s one I’ve been excited about for quite some time! I caught a screening of Zootopia earlier this week, and just like every other Disney movie, it was filled with a roller coaster of emotions and tons of great life lessons for both kids and adults!
Zootopia follows Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), the first rabbit to join the police force in a mammal metropolis where all kinds of animals (predators and prey) live and thrive together. The city of Zootopia is made up of several different sub-city types (e.g. Rainforest, Tundratown, The Burrows, Sahara) to accommodate the climate needs for all animals, but it kind of reminds me of the different boroughs in NYC!
Hopps is challenged from day one on the police force to be taken seriously by her coworkers and boss (i.e. bulls, elephants, lions), but is determined to prove herself. She eagerly pursues the opportunity to solve the mysterious case of one of several animals that has gone missing in Zootopia, and finds herself teaming up with a sarcastic fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who makes her quest a lot more… interesting.
There are so many big names voicing the characters in the film, several of which I knew about beforehand, and many more I discovered when the credits reel ran! Some voices to keep an ear out for? Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Bonnie Hunt, J.K. Simmons, and Shakira (to name a few).
My youngest sister attended the screening with me and wanted to add in her thoughts on the movie – a review from a kid’s (8-year old’s) perspective. Here it is:
Zootopia was a great movie!! It’s very funny and it has action, too. But that’s not all. Zootopia also has lots of fun and surprising things. Personally, my favorite would be the rabbit and the fox. They started out as enemies then they became best friends. They go on a mission together. And sometimes the animals that seem to be good can actually be bad. There is one part when something happens to the fox, and it’s very suspenseful. But… I can’t tell you what happens next!! Watch the movie to find out!
Just under 2 hours, Zootopia is rated PG, and is a great movie to bring the family to this weekend. There are some fun little pop culture slip-ins adults will catch, like references to Breaking Bad and The Godfather (couldn’t stop laughing at these parts). I love when kid movies throw those little bones in! Plus, it’s so funny to see all of the animals with human-like personalities. Some of them are too relatable, whether it’s seeing traits in yourself, or people you know.
So what do you think? Will you be seeing Zootopia?
