The Secret Life of Pets

This weekend the highly-anticipated Secret Life of Pets is out! As a dog mom, I’ve been looking forward to this “kid’s movie” since I first saw the teaser trailer last year. I caught an early screening a couple weeks ago, and let me tell you, it doesn’t disappoint! Plus, if you’re a fan of the minions, you can catch a hilarious short before the movie starts!

So what’s The Secret Life of Pets about? Exactly what it sounds like. What our lovable pets (i.e. dogs, cats, birds, fish, hamsters) are up to when us pet parents aren’t around. The main character, Max, reminded me so much of my own pup, Sheba, which made it even more enjoyable!

The house pets of NYC have quite the adventurous day in this film when Max’s owner brings home a new dog, Duke, to add to their family. During their walk, they end up in a sticky situation cornered by some ferocious alley cats and then in a truck that’s headed for the pound. The duo are rescued by an unlikely animal and are introduced to an interesting world of former house-pets, who are living the rebel life, and want Max and Duke to join their underground club.

While Max and Duke try to navigate the situation, Max’s neighborhood friends realize something’s wrong and attempt a rescue mission to find their friend somewhere in the “concrete jungle.” And we thought our pets just sat around all day!

I’d say they got the pet personalities pretty spot on throughout the film – especially with Chloe the cat! The Secret Life of Pets also had a great blend of adult and kid-humor, which kept the entire theater laughing throughout. It was interesting to see all of the different personalities as well – they were just as diverse as human personalities!

To add to the excitement, the movie studio also released “petmoji,” where you can create fun emojis of your pet or the characters from the movie. So entertaining! If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, watch below!

Do you ever wonder what your pet’s up to when you’re not home?

  • The previews for this are hilarious. And yeah, I have wanted to set up cameras to see what our pets do — particularly how the heck Tinkerbell STILL gets into the trash can.

    • I have a camera I use to check in on Sheba with sometimes. They’re awesome to have to spy on pets, haha. I’ve caught her walking across the TV stand before!

  • I am SO excited to see this one soon!

  • I’m so glad that the movie lived up to the hype! I think that my husband and I will have to catch it sometime during the week when maybe there aren’t a ton of kids in the theater!

    • Definitely! They should made a “bring your dog to the movie theater day” for it :)

  • Cannot wait to watch this one!

  • I thought about going to see this recently, but wasn’t sure if it would be as good as the preview. I’ll definitely have to catch it when it’s out for rental after reading your review!

    • I think it lived up pretty well! I hope you enjoy it when you get a chance to watch!

  • Dustin is taking me to see this on the weekend; I’ve been dying to go because I’m such a dog mama!

    • You and me both, girl! You’re going to love it! I couldn’t wait to get home and give Sheba a big hug afterwards!
