How to Make a Succulent Garden

In the past year, DIY terrariums and succulent gardens have really taken off. I’ve always thought they were so cute, but stayed away from them because I unfortunately, was not gifted with the “green thumb,” and assumed I wouldn’t be able to keep them alive. Wrong. A friend gifted me with a set of 3 for Christmas and I was surprised at how easy it is/was to keep them thriving!

Over the weekend, I found that my boyfriend’s mom has been hit with the “succulent garden bug” as well, and we decided to do some DIYing and made the most beautiful little gardens (which by the way are totally ok’d by TSA to bring on domestic flights). I still can’t believe how easy the process was, and am so excited to share it with you today so you can make your own succulent garden!

Wondering how you can make your own succulent garden? It's so easy! Check out my DIY tutorial.

Gather Your Materials

You can pick up materials for your garden in-store or online at places like Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Amazon. Keep in mind that aside from the individual plants and pot/bowl you pick up, you’ll be able to use the items for more than one garden – especially if you’re making smaller ones.

Get Started

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you’re ready to begin! First, lay the foundation of your garden with soil, filling the pot about halfway. Then start arranging each of your plants, digging them into the soil a bit and filling in additional soil to hold it in place. Note that if you’re not happy with the layout, you can always shift things around easily!

As you fill your pot with more plants and dirt (almost to the top), you’ll be on the homestretch! The last step in the process is filling the entire pot with stones/pebbles to cover the dirt. And then you’re done! It’s really that easy.

As far as maintenance go, succulents actually don’t like a lot of water. In fact, you only really need to give a little spritz of water and succulent food every 2 weeks or so!

I think I can confidently say that I’ve found my new DIY obsession. Who knew that making a succulent garden was so easy?! It’s a pretty calming activity too. Look out adult coloring books – there’s a new stress-relieving player in town!

    • Thanks, Christina! You definitely should! The pots are so easy to make and the succulents are extremely low maintenance!

  • Love it! The lighting in my office is TERRIBLE but to try and bring a little “life” to my desk, I bought some fake succulents and even though they aren’t real, they still bring some greenery and beauty and since succulents already look kind of fake, they’re perfect but I’d love some real ones too!

    • Love that idea! I like to spruce up my desk with fun things like that too :) You should get some real ones as well, they’re so easy to take care of!

  • Oooh this is so pretty!!

  • Chrissa – Physical Kitchness

We JUST moved in to a house with succulents lining the backyard fence but it’s a mess and I want to regrow them – so this post is PERFECT. I hope they transplant well because I want to do cute pots like you did. Thanks for the tips!

    • They do! You can pack in the soil around them to arrange them however you want. So happy to hear this is helpful for you! I can’t wait to see how yours turn out!

  • Sarah Jean

I’ve been in love with succulents for a long time now. I’m nervous to try this because I didn’t seem to be born with a green thumb but would sure love for someone to make it for me!

    • I was nervous too (I definitely don’t have a green thumb) but it ended up being so much easier than I expected!

  • Tiffany Austin

What a beautiful gift idea! Love it! Absolutely beautiful!

  • So pretty! I am not a garden type person. My boyfriend deals with all of the yard work, etc at our house. I have plants before though and I did fairly well with keeping them alive.

    • Thanks, Mistle! I don’t have a green thumb at all but these are super low maintenance, so they’re right up my alley!

  • I LOVE succulents!! You’ve made such a beautiful display.

  • Elle Schott

I have always wanted to have succulents in my home but i hardly have any natural lighting in my apartment so i am afraid that they would die because they would not get enough sunlight :(

    • They actually don’t need too much sunlight! I keep mine on the kitchen counter (out of the natural light) and they’re still thriving!

  • Aileen (Aileen Cooks)

Your succulent garden turned out beautifully. I haven’t made one, but my husband is really into growing succulents.

    • I usually can’t either, Julie! This is definitely the way to go!

  • Amanda | Maple Alps

This is so perfect. Now my only task is to keep them alive…. I seriously have a black thumb! *cries*

  • I LOVE succulents! This is such a cute little garden. :3
Fun fact: I killed a cactus once… It literally deflated (wut?!) so I’ve been too nervous to try and keep any plants alive since haaha.

    Christie’s Take on Life. xx

    • Thanks, Christie! Taking care of plants is seriously an art! I’ve been doing a good job keeping the succulents alive so far, so maybe give it a try again :)

  • Molly

Succulents are my favorite, since I cannot seem to keep any other kind of plants alive :( I love this garden and definitely want to try making my own soon!

    • Me too! These seem to be the only ones I keep alive as well, haha. Let me know how it goes when you make yours!

  • I love succulents, but for whatever reason, mine keep getting REALLY tall- too tall for that type of plant. I don’t know what it is.
However, I do want to switch the soil to succulent soil, because I know that would be better for them.

    • How strange! I wonder if it’s the type of succulent you picked up? Maybe try getting a variety for your garden next time!

  • Abby Grajewski

I love succulents! I am drawn to them like a moth to a flame. Seriously, if I see them out of the corner of my eye at a store, I have to go look. But, for some reason I have never made my own succulent garden. I will making one soon!

    • They’re the best! If I knew how easy it was to make them I would’ve started making them a long time ago!

  • Your succulent garden looks so good! What a fun way to make a big change in the home.

    • Thanks, Naya! It definitely helps add some personality to the place :)

  • Ashleigh

This garden is so perfect! I recently bought a few succulents but have yet to do much with them. This is great inspiration, thank you for sharing!

    • Yay! You’ll have to let me know how it turns out :)

  • Lauren Norton

So cute! I had no idea there was specific soil for succulents and cacti! Shows how much of a green thumb I have! How much light do succulents need? I have been wanting to make a succulent garden but my apartment is very dark – light doesn’t come in much from outside so I haven’t been able to have plants…

    • Thanks, Lauren! I don’t have much of a green thumb either but these I can handle! They don’t need much natural light so you should be ok to give it a try!
