I’ve always had a huge love for music and it’s grown even more over the years with all of the new songs and artists I’ve discovered thanks to watching many different TV shows. My music taste spans just about every decade and genre, so trying to narrow the TV shows with the best music down was no easy feat, but here are what I consider the 6 TV shows with the best music.
We all lived for this show back in the day, and the music that came from it was always blasting from my headphones. I think The O.C. definitely paved the way for music in TV – especially with most of the teen shows that followed (namely Laguna Beach and The Hills).
Notable Songs: Jem’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” Matt Pond’s “Champagne Supernova,” and Death Cab for Cutie’s “The Sound of Settling”
More recently, HBO’s Girls has put SO many songs on the map for us millennials in the background as the characters navigate life as twenty-somethings in NYC. I think it has a pretty good balance of hip, indie, and crosses several genres.
Notable Songs: Icona Pop’s “I Love It,” and Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own”
The Vampire Diaries
A lot of the music from TVD actually reminds me of the tunes from The O.C. since it’s pretty indie, but so good! In recent years, I’ve found myself using the Shazam app most when watching this show to find out what song is playing.
Notable Songs: Carolina Liar’s “I’m Not Over,” and The Raveonette’s “The Christmas Song”
I know you’re all with me on this one! I was in middle school when this show started and remember my friend and I getting our after school snack of vanilla ice cream with Oreos (yum!) and catching an episode here and there. After rewatching the show from beginning to end right before the revival
Notable Songs: XTC’s “Then She Appeared,” and Grant Lee Buffalo’s “Truly Truly”
I’ve watched this show since the beginning and get SO many laughs from it. But also, THE MUSIC! Being set in the 80s, the show is filled with so many great 80s tunes, which I live for!
Notable Songs: Pete Townshend’s “Let My Love Open the Door,” Pat Benatar’s “Shadows of the Night,” and Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”
Admittedly, I haven’t watched Grey’s Anatomy in YEARS (it went downhill for a while there and I could never bring myself to power through to when it supposedly got “good again”), but I can tell you the music was always top-notch! In fact, I think this one might actually hold the #1 spot in all of my TV-watching history in terms of music.
Notable Songs: Tegan and Sara’s “Where Does the Good Go,” Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars,” and Unkle Bob’s “Swans”
Do you agree with these? What other show(s) would you add to the list?
