Why You Should Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

“Comfort zone” is defined as “a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease and without stress.” I think it’s safe to say people are pretty happy in this place. But since it’s Monday (and on Mondays we need a little extra encouragement), I’m here to challenge you to step out of that comfort zone.

Astrologically speaking, I’m a Cancer (the crab), so by no means am I an expert at leaving my comfort zone. But it is something I’ve been trying to make a conscious effort to do more of. Here’s why you should step out of your comfort zone too.

You Can Experience New Things

You’ll never experience new things if you’re sitting in your comfortable place. So take a deep breath and agree to try something new. You could find yourself being introduced to something you end up loving! Or on the flip side, maybe you don’t love it, but at least you tried it (#noregrets).

You Have the Chance to Meet New People

By stepping out of your comfort zone, you can meet new people. Who knows, you might make a new friend, someone who can teach you something, or even a person that gives you the boost you need to achieve your goals.

You Get a Confidence Boost

The biggest reason people stay in their comfort zone is because they fear failure or embarrassment. But taking the plunge to try something you’re a bit uncomfortable with actually makes you MORE confident. Whether failure or success, you can pat yourself on the back and say, “I did it!” And that my friends, is a great feeling!

Your Comfort Zone Expands + You Grow

This is the ultimate goal, right? No one ever did “big things” by staying in the same place. You have to grow. And in order to do so, you have to take risks. After all, life really begins at the end of your comfort zone!

This month alone I already took two big steps outside of my comfort zone and I must say, both have had a big impact on achieving all of the big points I mentioned above.

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone

Last week, I played in my company’s charity golf tournament. Here’s the curveball. I’ve never played actual golf. Only mini golf, which is much more contained and SO different than 18 holes of green on a legit golf course (and with people who play regularly + are really good). But you know what, it actually ended up going MUCH better than I expected. Believe it or not, I actually got the ball up in the air several times, I scored for our team, and learned a lot about golf!

And earlier this month I decided to go to a meet-up that a group I’m in was having, only I was new to the group and didn’t know anyone. The problem was nobody had discussed anything about the meet-up in a week and a half so people just assumed it wasn’t happening anymore. I thought about just turning around and trekking back home, but instead decided to message one of the girls in the group and within a few minutes she arrived and we had the best time chatting over dinner and drinks!

Time to Fly

Have you stepped out of your comfort zone recently? If not, what’s holding you back?! Whatever you’ve been skeptical to do or try, I’m challenging you to get out there and do it!

I was forced to step out of my comfort zone after a brain injury. Every person I met, every place I went, was uncomfortable. But eventually, I got better, and now I see what a blessing it was. I never used to step beyond that which I knew, and my accident forced me to look at life differently. Life is an adventure, and I’m learning to fly. Thank you for this inspiring article!

It most definitely is! So glad to hear you’re doing well and were able to step out of your comfort zone. Life is a crazy but beautiful thing!

  2. May 22, 2017 / 2:32 PM

I think the message you’re sharing is SO important. I can be pretty introverted so forcing myself to go to things like the meet up you described can be intimidating but I usually end up happy I pushed myself once I go.

    • May 24, 2017 / 9:19 PM

Thank you! And YES on the aftermath. It’s always a good reminder to ourselves to breathe and go for it!

I always try to step out of my comfort zone a little bit here and there. It can be really uncomfortable at first, but then it is one of the most rewarding things you can do.

    • May 24, 2017 / 9:19 PM

Couldn’t agree more with you, Nina. Thanks for reading!

I totally agree- I am always trying to push myself to do things or even wear things that are not very “me” because I want to step out of my comfort zone! then you feel more confident and able to try new things!

    • June 9, 2017 / 12:20 AM

YES! It’s just giving yourself that initial push to make it happen. Once you do it’s full steam ahead :)

Such a great idea!! If you only stay in your comfort zone, you miss so much of the world around you!!

    • June 10, 2017 / 5:59 PM

Exactly! It’s amazing what awaits you on the other side of your comfort zone!

  6. May 22, 2017 / 4:53 PM

Love this! I’m a cancer (and a gemini) and totally know what you mean about resisting leaving my comfort zone. But the greatest miracles always happen outside of it <3

    • June 14, 2017 / 10:05 PM

They most certainly do! And for us Cancers, I think the comfort zone is even harder to get out of! Every time I do I’m really happy about it though!

Love this! I really try to push myself often, especially in blogging if I’m feeling uncertain I try and challenge myself! Makes you feel more alive :)

    • June 12, 2017 / 11:36 PM

It absolutely does! So glad to hear you’re pushing yourself, girl. Keep it up!

  8. May 22, 2017 / 8:53 PM

I think those company tournaments can be the best way to learn golf. I know I learned the same way when I was in college!! It’s way more fun and less pressure!!

    • June 14, 2017 / 10:02 PM

That’s awesome! I was the only one who hadn’t golfed before so it was pretty interesting in the beginning, haha. Fortunately the people I was playing with were cool about it!

  9. May 22, 2017 / 9:11 PM

So agree with the confidence boost! Something may seem scary or uncomfortable at first, but after doing it, it feels amazing!

    • June 11, 2017 / 3:56 PM

Absolutely YES! I find that when I step out of my comfort zone and get that confidence boost I get on a roll with it. It’s a great feeling!

  10. May 22, 2017 / 9:42 PM

Stepping out of your comfort zone is so important! I’m going to a blog conference by myself later this year and it is definitely quite a few steps outside my comfort zone haha.

    • June 10, 2017 / 8:39 PM

Yes! Which blogging conference are you going to? I know it’ll totally be worth it!

That is so awesome that you hung out and ended up having drinks with her, I would probably be too shy to do that =P So important to step outside of your comfort zone! *thegoodthingscomin.wordpress.com

    • June 14, 2017 / 10:04 PM

It really is! That was a big step for me, but I figured since it would be an hour of driving wasted I may as well just do it. So glad I did!

This is something I feel like I always have to work on. Im awful about it!

    • June 9, 2017 / 9:04 PM

It’s a tough one for sure. But so rewarding once you do!

  13. May 23, 2017 / 12:43 PM

I am getting better about stepping out of my comfort zone, but still have a ways to go. Starting a blog was a big one for me!

    • June 11, 2017 / 3:56 PM

It’s always a work-in-progress. So glad to hear you’re pushing yourself for it, Willow!

  14. May 23, 2017 / 1:41 PM

Love this and so true. Stepping out of my comfort zone by choice or by circumstances has caused the best experiences and personal growth I have ever known!

    • June 12, 2017 / 11:37 PM

Thanks, Missy! I couldn’t agree with you more!

  15. May 24, 2017 / 8:37 AM

This is so true! Stepping out of your comfort zone is so important for personal growth and having the chance to learn and experience new things. Loved this post.

    • June 9, 2017 / 9:04 PM

Thanks, Kiara! I couldn’t agree more!

  16. May 24, 2017 / 12:28 PM

“Life happens outside your comfort zone” – which is SO true. Anything I’ve ever done that’s been rewarding, exciting and gratifying has been because I did something I wasn’t exactly comfortable with.

    • June 14, 2017 / 10:03 PM

Exactly! I think the end reward is something we need to remind ourselves of more instead of focusing on the uncomfortable factor!

  17. May 24, 2017 / 2:59 PM

I try to do this regularly. I usually go to Dabble classes by myself and have to meet people there. I also joined a runner meetup group. This is challenging for me because I am an introvert, so talking to new people doesn’t come easily for me. Love this post!

    • June 14, 2017 / 10:02 PM

Thanks, Marette! So glad to hear you’re getting out there and stepping out of your comfort zone. I know it’s tough, but so rewarding in the end!

  18. May 26, 2017 / 7:27 AM

This is such an encouraging and inspiring post. I’m awful at stepping out of my comfort zone but it is such an exhilirating and refreshing experience when I do! It’s definitely something I need to do more of!

    • June 12, 2017 / 11:37 PM

Thanks, Leslie! I’m totally with you, but I’ve been trying to step out more too. So many amazing things always end up coming from it!

  19. May 26, 2017 / 2:20 PM

I love pushing myself to do this. Sometimes I let my weight get in the way of trying or doing new things but I always try to push through so that I can experience as much as I can during my lifetime. Great post and reminders! XO

    • June 14, 2017 / 10:07 PM

Thank you! It’s definitely not easy to do, but I think it’s so rewarding in the end! We need to focus on the benefits and not the intimidating piece of it!

  20. June 2, 2017 / 10:50 PM

Such a good reminder! I love stepping out of my comfort zone because it really helps me grow and challenges me as a person to be better!
