Most people put something along the lines of “go to the gym” or “lose 10 pounds” on their New Years Resolutions list. Although it’s definitely something I’ve been wanting to do, I previously accepted the fact that it wasn’t going to happen. I mean, if I wanted to, I could’ve. But it’s always something that people (myself included) tend to put on the back burner. That said, I recently renewed my gym membership and am on a kick to get myself in shape. Thus far, I’ve been doing great with it, so I want to share what I believe are the keys to a perfect workout. Enjoy!
The first thing you need (aside from a gym membership) is the motivation to workout. Yes, it can be hard with work, school, and any other life responsibilities you might have. But set a goal for yourself and get yourself into a new routine. Choose two days a week to go to the gym and make one day for “taking it easy”– walking/jogging/running on the treadmill, riding the bicycles, etc. and the other for a heavier workout on the machines. Rather than setting a limit for x amount of pounds you want to lose or that you want to be a size x, take those 2 days and set a goal of working out for 45 minutes-1 hour. Starting simple is key.
Perhaps the most essential part of a perfect workout is a good gym playlist. Here’s a list of 20 songs that I
use for my workouts– I hope they’ll keep you motivated too!

For me, this is is the biggest factor in my working out. Like most other people, I’ve been making excuses of why I can’t go to the gym this day.. and the next.. and the day after. A good friend of mine who has been involved with sports most of her life has been cornering me and my excuses (in a good way) and helping me stay active and continue to go to the gym. 1 of the 2 days I have set aside to go to the gym every week is with her. At the gym, she pushes me to keep going. Having a gym buddy is absolutely key in having a perfect workout. Not only are you able to see your friend(s) and catch up on the latest gossip, you have someone else to keep you going and vice versa.
My second “gym buddy” is my new pair of Nike Free Run shoes. As lame as it sounds, I actually feel more motivated to go to the gym with these shoes. Normally, I’m not a fan of tennis shoes but these are by far the most comfortable pair I’ve ever had. You can also purchase a new pair of shoes or some other gym accessory as motivation to get you to the gym. I bribed myself and it’s been working!
