The Seven-Year Itch

Full disclosure: This post might get a little cheesy.

Today marks 7 years that Ted and I have been dating. SEVEN! On one hand that feels impossible because that means that we started college 7 years ago, and also, makes me feel super old! On the other, well, it’s still just crazy to me!

After 7 years, there’s said to be a psychological, “seven-year itch” thing, as seen in Marilyn Monroe’s 1950’s film, where couples start to become uninterested with each other. While the jury is out on how true that is (scientifically speaking), it couldn’t be farther from the truth for us.

We (unofficially) met the first week of freshman year of college in an elevator, where Ted and his best friend (who lived across the hall) decided it would be funny to push buttons for all of the floors. Not cool. We officially met a couple days later in said friend’s dorm, and started crushin’ pretty quickly. A week later, a group of us decided to head into the city (NYC) for a night out on the town.

Our dreams were squashed pretty quickly when we realized our 18-year old selves wouldn’t get into the 21+ clubs (although a couple people actually did), and so the remainder of us in the group began wandering aimlessly figuring out what we’d do for the next 7 hours or so, since no trains were running until 6 in the morning and nobody wanted to drop cash for a ridiculously expensive cab back.

It was a crazy night of adventure in the pouring rain for the group of 8 or so of us, but we managed to survive it! Ted and I spent the majority of the night talking and by the time we all made it back to our dorms, my roommate stated the obvious – “you are so smitten with him.” Yep, I was (and he was too). I remember it like it was yesterday. And here we are 7 years later, still smitten with each other.

Here are a few good ol’ throwbacks from our first year together. Such babies!

Happy 7 years to my best friend and other half. So much happiness and love. Cheers to many more!

Do you believe in the seven-year itch?

My husband and I have been together for 18 years total. Married 10, and I have yet to get an “itch!” There are for sure days I don’t like him very much (LOL!!) but I have never become uninterested in him :) Happy Anniversary!

    • Too funny (and definitely agree)! Congrats on your anniversary, you’re coming up on a really big one!

  • Aww how sweet! Happy seven years!!

I think the Seven-Year Itch happens when you stop nurturing your relationship and each other. If you work hard enough, it won’t happen. Happy anniversary! :)

  • Happy anniversary you cuties!!!! <3 I do not believe in the seven year itch at all. It doesn't happen with friends or family and if it happens with a significant other than that's probably a sign that something's wrong.

    • Thank you :) Can’t believe it’s been seen years! Holy cow!

  • You two are adorable! Happy Anniversary! We will be dating 8 years in March. No 7 year itch for us, either! Hope you’ve enjoyed your special day and here’s to many more!

  • That is so sweet!!!! <3 <3

  • Aww that’s cute how you two met and became a couple. You’re adorable together :) Happy Anniversary! Here’s to the next 7 and more and more and more years!

  • Aww, such cute old photos! My husband and I actually also met 7 years ago–we met on the very first day of my freshman year of college, so there’s one similarity for ya! haha…we didn’t start going out until nearly the end of my sophomore year, though.

  • Congratulations on 7 years! I haven’t ever heard the seven-year-itch?

    • Thank you! Can’t believe how quickly it’s gone!

  • Congratulations on the anniversary!

  • Congratulations!! You two are so cute!
