Probably THE coolest activity I’ve ever done while visiting a new city took place in Prague. Visiting the beer spa! If you’re wondering, yes it’s just like it sounds, and yes, it’s pretty freaking incredible.
Beer is a HUGE part of the Czech Republic’s culture, as they’ve been brewing for over a thousand years! It’s such a big part, in fact, that beer is actually cheaper than water! Despite how crazy it sounds, it’s true! The Czechs believe strongly in the benefit of beer, especially the fact that it’s good for your body and overall health! In fact, beer spas first became popular in the Middle Ages!
We booked an appointment with Beer Spa Bernard a couple months before our trip to Prague (the calendar fills up quickly), and ended up being the first visitors of the day, at 11:30 in the morning. There are two locations, but the original one in Prague 1, is where we went, and it was just steps away from the main square in the city, which was perfect!
Upon our arrival we checked in and were escorted to the changing area, where we were able to store and lock up our belongings. We loved the privacy at the spa, as only one group/reservation was available at a time for a 2-hour time period, so there weren’t other people bustling around!
There are a few different service options available (full list here), but we selected the 2-person beer spa experience with massage, which is an amazing value, at about $125 total for two people.
After we changed, we were brought to part one of the beer spa experience, the traditional beer bath. Here, a tub was filled with beer hops (it’s not just beer poured into a tub), and we were provided with two filled pint glasses. Here, we relaxed in the tub of hops and drank our beer for 30 minutes. And the best part? We had a beer tap next to us to refill our beer glasses, as much as we wanted!
Post-tub, we were wrapped up tightly in warm, cozy sheets on a heated bed to enhance the effect from the beer bath for another 30 minutes. While we were laying there, we were also brought MORE beer, because after all, it is a beer spa! We couldn’t help but repeat over and over again, “man, this is the life!” It was SO peaceful and relaxing!
Next, our massages! They took place in the same room, but on a massage table brought in. There was a total of 40 minutes included in our package, so we split it in half, each getting a 20-minute massage. I don’t think I’ve ever been so relaxed with each of the activities!
We were so sad when our two hours were up because we were having such a great time, but understandably, couldn’t stay here all day since other people needed to experience the awesomeness too. So back to the changing room we went to freshen up for reality, and of course, drink more beer while doing so!
There are showers in the changing room, but it is recommended NOT to shower for at least 12 hours afterwards in order to really give your body the full effect of the beer spa. Be warned that you’ll feel a tad grainy all day afterwards due to the hops, but we didn’t care! In fact, we started singing/rapping “hops in my hair, hops everywhere” all day long, and it was quite entertaining!
To end our time at the beer spa, we were given a certificate of completion and an extra bottle of Bernard beer to take with us as a souvenir! If you find yourself in Prague, I HIGHLY recommend a visit to Beer Spa Bernard to experience it yourself. It was an unforgettable experience that I know we’ll be talking about for quite some time!
Have you ever visited a beer spa? What do you think of the concept?
