5 Reasons Dogs Make the Best Friends

Did you know that October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month? And coincidentally, my (former shelter) pup’s birthday month! In honor of both, let’s chat about the reasons dogs make the best friends (and why you should totally adopt a shelter dog, if you’re able to make the necessary lifestyle changes)!

If you follow me on Instagram, you might be familiar with the star of today’s post, my dog, Sheba!

Read these 5 reasons dogs make the best friends!

Built-in Workout Accountability Partner

I’m the worst at actively getting myself to workout. But since my pup, Sheba, needs to go out, I have no choice but to take her for walks. Hence, a built-in workout accountability partner. And if I’m being honest, one that really pushes me to get moving, even when I’d rather have a lazy morning/night.

Unconditional Love

Nothing beats the unconditional love from dogs. This is perhaps the biggest reason they’re called “(wo)man’s best friend.” They’ll always be loyal to you and keep you on a pedestal. And as one of my favorite quotes says, “no one on earth will love you more, be more patient with your moods, or keep your secrets better than your dog.” It’s so true!

Great Listeners

When it comes to our pups, we’re in a 100% judgment-free zone. While they can’t respond back to us with human words, they’re always there to listen to everything we have to say, good or bad.

ALWAYS Excited to See You

Nothing beats walking through the door after being gone for a few hours and seeing Sheba’s reaction. You’d think I was gone for years the way she lights up, tail wagging, huge doggy smile on her face, as she runs upstairs to do the “happy dance.” Whether my day was good or bad, my mood always goes up +1000 when I see her reaction. It’s the little things in life!

Pawtner-in-Crime

See what I did there? No matter what the adventure in, my pup’s always down to join. Whether it’s doing a PDQ-run for dinner (Sheba LOVES their “doggy tenders,”), road-tripping somewhere, or lounging during a Netflix binge-watch, she happily hangs right by my side, ready for whatever kind of adventure the day brings!

Do you have a dog? What reasons would you add (or do you agree with) as to why dogs make the best friends?

Share:
  • YES TO EVERYTHING! I have 4 dogs but I’ve been hanging out a bit more with my oldest and I love how loyal he is no matter what. He’s the biggest and everyone is scared of him but he’s actually the most quiet and gentle. He’s the perfect best friend!

    • I love to hear that! Dogs are the best! What kind do you have?

  • yes! I love my dog so much! They’re also great to eat with lol .

    • So true! Although depending on the meal, sometimes they try to hog all the food for themselves :)

  • <3 <3 I love the pic of your dog with the mustache! My dog does all these things except being a great listener – he literally rolls his eyes at me if I start getting too chatty, haha

    • Thanks, Liz! Too funny about your dog rolling his eyes, hahaha. They still love us!

  • Love these pictures!!! Adorable!! My fur babies are my best friends. I can’t wait to get home to them everyday. If I didn’t have to leave them to go to work, I would def snuggle with them all day.

    • Thanks, Mistle! I’m totally with you! I wish I could stay home all the time with mine!

  • I seriously don’t know what I’d do without my pup! He’s always there to listen, like you said, and I love walking in and getting all the kisses because he’s that excited to see me. I will say that Dart is probably a little more judgey than Sheba because I definitely feel like he judges me when I try to take selfies with him!

    • Totally agree! I’m sure Sheba gets annoyed with my photo taking too, haha. Sometimes it takes a while to get a successful selfie together :)

  • Leslie Soto

love this post! It’s so true plus they make really great snuggle buddies when it’s cold or when you’re sad! I love my sweet girl. She’s seriously the best.

    • Thanks, Leslie! It’s so true! Pups are the greatest :)

  • I agree with all of the above :) I can never be unhappy once I get home, no matter how rough my day was, because Hawkeye is just SO happy to see me and that’s all that matters! She is definitely my best friend.

    • EXACTLY! We’re so lucky to have such great buddies!

  • Omgee, I love the first picture with the tilted head. It made me giggle and put a smile on face. Totally agree that dogs are the best of friends. Our dogs are always eager to greet us and always gives us toe kisses.

    • Thanks, Erlene! I don’t know where I’d be without my sidekick pup :)

  • I agree. I have 3 dogs and they are all my best friends. Unconditional love and the fact they’re always happy to see me puts a smile on my face and makes me happy. These pics of your baby are super cute especially the one with the mustache lol

    • Thank you :) Those factors make me so happy too. Dogs are just the best!

  • oh such adorable pictures of your puppy! I love the one with the mustache!! You make me jealous, one day I’ll have one, but for now I’ll live vicariously through others!

    • Thanks, Angela! Adopting my pup was the best decision ever. I can’t wait for you to experience having one yourself one day!

  • I love cuddling with my dog! All of these are great points and made me want to squeeze my dog a lot more.

  • YES! Sheba is so cute!
My Cooper was very adamant for the longest time that he needed to go on walks first thing in the morning(like, as soon as the sun came up)! But, after a few months he decided that he preferred sleeping late in the mornings, which made it so hard to leave him on days I had to go in to work early! I love the “pawtner in crime” point! Dogs are so great.

    • Thanks, Lauren! I totally agree! My pup loves sleeping in too – it’s incredibly helpful on weekend days I don’t have to be up early for anything!

  • Aww how adorable! We are looking into getting a dog for our kids in the next year or so!

    • Thanks, Hava! I bet the kids will be SO excited! What kind are you thinking of getting?

Your dog is adorable! I have to agree, my baby (he’s 7, so not technically a baby!) is my best buddy and is with me all day. Couldn’t imagine life without him.

    • Thanks, Bree! I couldn’t agree with you more. Believe it or not, my pup just turned 7 too! But no matter how old they get, they’re still our babies :)

  • mapam30

Great reasons! As a kid we always had dogs, when our daughter was little she wanted a cat, now we have two! (shelter rescued) One thinks she’s a dog—she’ll play fetch and sits and begs for food. –You and Sheba look like you have a great time together.

    • We definitely do! Too funny about your cats. Who knows.. maybe you’ll end up bringing a dog into the fam soon too!

  • Completely agree with all of these reasons! They are also the perfect best friend for kids when they have had a bad day! Love these reasons, and your dog is adorable!

    • So glad to hear it, Carrie! Idk where we’d be without our sweet pups!

  • Ashley Stephenson

    • Thanks, Amanda! Having a dog is a big time commitment, but I think the hardest part is the transition to the changes in the beginning!
